The best. Without it, we would never have Slamcore, Deathcore, melodic black, symphonic noise, or guys putting cats in bags and beating them with hammers.

The best type of music to listen to. I like heavy metal songs from the current and the past, and am happy just to listen to it, regardless of when the song was made. If it's a good song, why not listen to it?

its amazing, i love everything from the old days of sabbath to iron maiden, to metallica, to slipknot to immortal ect. hands down best music out there if you call it distorted noise and garbage ect. then you dont know what real music is. this is music with balls, music that isnt afraid to get in your face stare you down and spit on you, not this whiney crap that you hear on the radio

Pretty bad music but tolerable as long as it's not deliberate parody. I need to believe somebody can be this earnest about their masculinity, and care so deeply about their bombastic guitar, insane lyrics, and bad hair. I like collecting bad band names. Here is a flow chart some brilliant wag put together: http://www.comicvsaudience.net/images/flow_heavymet al.jpg Three stars just for the band names alone.

All generations love good aggressive, protest music. The best metal touches on the emotions of frustrated youth.

I grew up listening to metal because my dad was into it, and it's in my blood and that's something I'm proud of saying now that I've grown up and matured a lot over the years and I'm still a metal fan. although I love metal, a lot of bands claim to be metal and it disgusts me. all this new generations screaming and wrist slashing shit is getting old, and it has got to go.

I seem to have descended into a musical taste that drifts between metal and hard rock.

Love heavy metal. I mean really i hear people talking about how good journey's guitarist and all these classic or modern rock guitarists are, and really i mean metal is the cream of the crop when it comes to talented musicians.

I've always loved the early heavy and hard rock bands, up to about 1972 or 1973, though even then it was hard to say just what bands could plausibly be called heavy or hard rock, some were just blues rock bands, etc, and even then there were lots of subgenres....  The later stuff- the hair bands, speed metal, death metal, satanic nonsense, was mostly awful...

The few decent heavy metal bands (some of them are awesome, like Megadeth, for example) are annoyingly outnumbered by shite like Slayer, who roar about something they don't come close to understanding, and whose songs all sound identical. This is particularly evident with the 'emo' and 'screamo' invasion of the last few years.

Better than most of that gay pop sh*t that most people are playing nowadays. As I Lay Dying, Beneath the sky, Kataklysm, Fear Factory...good stuff.

Has there ever been such a joke in the history of music as heavy metal. 'Spinal Tap'  sums up the whole genre -  bombastic, humourless, derivative and cliched. The few exceptions are Anthrax -cuz at least they brought some humour to the procedings. Motorhead, as they too were a bit of a laff and bands that are more bluesy hard rock e.g. AC/DC, Aerosmith, Guns n Roses.

I only like 80's stuff like Whitesnake, Van Halen, etc Otherwise I have to say that today's Heavy Metal is much too depressing for newageriseth :P And....AT LEAST in the 80's...the heavy metal sounded like something, with the aid of harmonic melodies and chords, but today's heavy metal? Too distorted beyond reason and when you can't even tell what the key of a piece of music is in, that means it's bad, yo. Word.

Sure, some of it is crap-just like anything else-but the cream of metal, such as Down,Crowbar,C.O.C.,Black Label Society,Sabbath etc. is a very valid musical form played by highly skilled and talanted artists.GREAT work ot music!

Untalented people banging on distorted guitars playing the same power chords over and over again, and screaming into the microphone. What's not to like?

Heavy metal is great music, but has sharply declined in the last couple of years, mostly thanks to this rap/metal fusion. I also feel sorry for real metal bands like metallica, who have had to change their sound to fit with the times. St. Anger was their worst album ever, I'm sorry to say.

It's called heavy metal because when it first came out it was described as sounding like heavy metal falling from the sky and hitting the ground. It seems like most people on here listen to one group and assume that they're all the same. There are some songs that are worth listening to but most of you refuse to see that. Remember that just because two things fit in the same category doesn't mean that they are carbon copies of each other. Also, just because a show is animated doesn't mean it's a piece of crap like pokemon.

One of the most useless music genres of all time. Not melodic in the slightest. Also almost always gives headaches.

Sorry, but I don't consider it to be "music"... nothing but pure grade-A noise and distortion!
